The shadow people mystery.

Have you seen the shadow people?

They creep into our world from the peripheral darkness, often with the malicious intent. For ages, their origins were shrouded in mystery. Some believed they hailed from the immaterial Plane of Shadow, an alien planet or even the future.

The shadow people remain just out of sight, following our movements and even seeking to envelop us. But just who are these dark beings so intent on invading out extrapersonal space?

The Science of Shadow People
Don’t fear the dark, gentle reader, for the mysterious shadow people are but hallucinations brought on by stimulation of the brain’s left temporoparietal junction.

In 2006, a Swiss study published in the journal Nature discovered the likely source of the shadow people. See, psychiatric and neurological patients have long reported these haunting apparitions. As with such paranormal experience-inducing conditions as sleep paralysis,  the cause of the illusion surely resided in the brain.

But where exactly?

The researchers made the discovery while evaluating a psychotically-normal 22-year-old woman for surgical treatment of epilepsy. When they electrically stimulated her brain’s left temporoparietal junction (TPJ), they repeatedly gave her the sensation of a lurking shadow man in her presence.

She perceived the shadow person just behind her, interfering with her attempts to read a book. When the researchers stimulated her in a seated position, she perceived herself to be seated in the entity’s lap.

“He was clasping her in his arms, which she described as an unpleasant feeling,” the study stated.

Essentially, she was observing her own body the whole time. But as the TPJ concerns elf-processing, self/other distinction and multisensory body integration info, the electrical stimulation caused her to attribute her own actions to an alien entity.* A similar distortion may be at work in various psychiatric manifestations of alien entities.

So there you have it. No Plane of Shadow required…
